Description

Horsehead & Flame Nebulae & surrounding dust

-----------------------------------

This image is from 3 hours of colour and 7 hours of Hydrogen-alpha data I collected last month, on the region around the Horsehead and Flame nebulae.

Not totally happy with the result, but I am still learning how to process the minor details. Had a tough time trying to remove the huge disruptive glare from Alnilam on the left side of the image.

Details on the objects:

Visible in the center of the image is the dark silhouette of the "Horsehead" nebula: a dark cloud of gas and dust in front of a large emission nebula (red/pink colour) caused by ionized hydrogen gas.

The "Flame" nebula, located in the lower-left, is a bright region of active star formation surrounded by dust.

On the center-left: the bright star 'Alnitak', the eastern-most star of "Orion's belt", which is easily visible with the naked eye even from heavy light pollution.

Also visible around the Horsehead and Flame nebulae is faint dust which is part of a much bigger molecular cloud in Orion (the same dust complex found around M42).
