Description

Extensive rille system on the floor of Sinus Medii (Middle Bay) in the very early hours of Sunday morning - imaged from Phillip Is on a morning of very good atmospheric seeing.

The prominent but deeply eroded craters on the left are Pallas (with central peak) and Murchison (named after Russian and Scottish geologists respectively). North of these lie the smaller craters Bode (left) and Ukert (further right). The main crater on the floor of Sinus Medii is Triesnecker. Agrippa lies in the bottom right corner.

The two small craters on the lower left on the floor of Sinus Medii are Bruce (American Philanthropist and astronomy patron Catherine Wolfe Bruce) and Blagg (British astronomer Mary Adela Blagg). The landing site of Surveyor 6 (Nov 10, 1967) is on this image just west of Bruce crater. This lander transmitted 30,027 images to earth.

The most spectacular features in this region however are the estensive system of rilles named Rimae Triesnecker, and the 220 km long Rima Hyginus further northeast which extends up to 800m below the surface of Sinus Medii and whose two banches meet at crater Hyginus. Numerous small craterlets pepper the floor of Sinus Medii.
