Description

This is the nice pair of nebulae, the Heart and Soul, presented in a HOO palette. To get a wider field of view, I tried my Canon 100-400L IS II zoom lens. I used it wide open (about f/5) at around 150mm of focal lens (145mm as reported by plate solving in APT). I'm very impressed by the quality of this zoom lens, very little star distortion even in the corners. Only problem is the lens ring and foot that are not solid enough for astronomic use. I had a few photos with stars that shifted during exposure. With better support, this lens is very usable and offer a good range of field of view! With the ZWO new EFW-EOS-II adapter, it is very simple to mount my ZWO ASI1600MM Pro and 1.25" EFW filter wheel on canon lenses.

Edit: After using this lens for a few more images, the stars shifting happens mainly when the lens points near the meridian. I think the problem is more related to the IS mechanism that is loose when pointing up then a problem with the foot. There is not much we can do about this except to avoid imaging near meridian...
