Description

I've been imaging the Horsehead every year since I took up astrophotography. It is an object that is one of the most imaged there is, but my quest over the years has been for increased depth and detail. There is so much here, ranging from the bright nebulae themselves to the extended nebulosity above the Flame and Horsehead and the intricate structures below, that I find myself never satisfied with my efforts. My last effort was first light with the 2600 MC Pro, about four hours, with the Horsehead in not the best of locations in the sky, passing over a light pollution dome. It was a good effort, but I wanted better. So this one adds four hours of luminance to that data, taken at Bin 1 with the ASI 294MM for maximum resolution. The luminance data was taken with a 0.8x reducer to give a similar FOV to the larger APS-C sensor of the 2600 MC Pro. My big regret here is that the color data was taken in two sessions - and in doing so, I had to crop a bit of the frame, since the 3 degree alignment that was the default in SGP meant I had to cut off some of the dark nebulae beneath the Horsehead that were revealed beautifully in the luminance data. Such is life. I suppose one can say the world doesn't need one more IC 434 image, but I certainly did, so this one's mine.

A big thanks to my friend and fellow MAS member, Gabe Shaughnessy, whose critique of my original processing led me to go back and reprocess and produce a better image. There is much I have learned from him and my other imaging colleagues at MAS and much I have to be thankful to them for.
