Description

"Stumbling around looking for matches in the dark. Counting the seconds before the thunder and the spark. What are you looking for? Eye of the storm!"

26 August 2022: The Eye of Doom - Helix Nebula, NGC 7293

Another very popular target! And for me, a very unplanned one - upon realising I had a few clear nights in late August and started scrolling through Telescopius and found NGC 7293 was at the perfect height to capture.

I remember seeing a photo of this one in a book years ago and being absolutely confounded by it's resemblance to a human eyeball - yet another example of pareidolia in space!

For some reason I had a really tough time processing this one. I think it's because it's just a small(ish) nebula against a black background with some stars. If you look at my previous images, the nebulosity really fills those frames - they're HUGE! But I just couldn't get this one sitting right for a while, and almost gave up. Also, I took around 140x300s each of Ha/Oiii/Sii (as well as RGB stars, which you see here) but couldn't get the Sii colour to look nice so I left it out. In hindsight, I would have have spent more time on Ha and Oiii and left Sii out altogether.
