Description

My vision for this image was for prominent dust to be displayed across the whole frame. What I didn't plan on was the increase in star quantity and intensity along the galactic plane (bottom left of the image). Maybe with a larger aperture optic I could have revealed some more dust in this area, but I think that's a challenge for another day! In the end I tried to leave the star intensity gradient "as-is" across the image. This created a unique look compared to the other mosaics I could find of this area, but its authentic to the raw data I captured, even if its perhaps not as aesthetically pleasing.

This is a 10 panel mosaic shot over two nights in December 2022. Each panel was 2.5 hours of total exposure, for 25hours total integration. As with any mosaic of this resolution, it will help to view the image at full size, and zoom in to see all the detail.

The mosaic was shot from relatively dark Bortle 3/4 skies, at the highest ambient temperatures I'd ever shot astro in (the sensors around 30degC). The gear used was three Samyang 135/2 lenses, attached to three Canon 6D cameras on the same mount. This "mosaic setup" has been a fun project to assemble over the last 6 months whilst waiting for clear skies. It was fun to finally use it to complete a decent image. Now I just need to resist the urge to scale it up to include more Samyang 135/2 lenses!
