Fishhead Nebula (NGC 896) in Ha

Another hydrogen alpha image! 10 hours of data, this time for NGC 896 - the Fishhead Nebula - found at the base of the Heart Nebula in Cassiopeia. Half the data was acquired in September of 2022 and the rest was taken almost exactly one year later. One of my earliest astrophotos (which I shall not share) was of this nebula, and boy, I've come a long way! This region is quite heavy in Ha, but doubly ionized oxygen is present enough to pursue a version in the HOO pallette.

In this particular image, I was surprised by the sharpness of the dark dust cloud structure, especially at 2 o'clock of the fish's head. Something clearly seen in the picture is how the dark nebulae masks a greater expanse of glowing hydrogen behind it, only showing the unconcealed region, appearing in the shape of a fish. Many emission nebulae make shapes we identify with on their own, like the Bubble Nebula. But in this case, like the Horsehead Nebula, without the dark structures, it wouldn't resemble much at all.

Throughout my imaging and processing of this one, I had that song stuck in my head... "eat 'em up, yum!"

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
