Description

A project to end the year and bring in the New Year with a favourite target of mine in the constellation of Eridanus. IC 2118 also known as the "Witch Head Nebula" and "Cederblad 41" is a faint reflection nebula illuminated by the nearby supergiant bright star Rigel, out of frame but to the right of this image.  Distance from Earth is about 900 light-years.

It was captured partially from my backyard in Gérgal, Almeria, Spain and a nearby mountain top Calar Alto, Almeria, Spain.  Not all the data was used due to a rotator failure at Calar Alto, so out of the total of 23 hours of images taken, I used 15 hours.

Next step is to capture some narrow band data to enhance the weak Ha background.

Imaging Dates: 27, 28, 29, 30, 31 Dec 2021 and 1 Jan 2021

Red: 115 x 180s = 5.75 H
Green: 133 x 180s =  5.65 H
Blue: 70 x 180s = 3.5 H
Light: 166 x 180s = 8.3 H (Not used, camera rotator failure)

Total Images Captured: 23.2 HImages used: R, G, B  = 14.9 H

Backyard Bortle 4.5, Calar Alto Bortle 3.5
