Description

Herschel's Garnet Star (MU Cephi) is a red supergiant star in the constellation Cepheus. It is one of the largest and most luminous stars known in the Galaxy. This massive variable star at 2,400 light years away shines more than 600,000 times that of our own Sun. The radius is more than 1,600 times larger than the Sun and would extend it out past the orbit of Saturn if it were in our Solar System. This area of the constellation Cepheus is also home to several dark nebula and emission nebula star forming regions.
