Description

A favourite object for visual observers and astrophotographers alike, Centaurus-A is a peculiar galaxy that defies description. Around 10Mlys away it is huge and emits strongly over the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Its yellow colour and lack of red emission nebulae suggests that it is rather old, whilst the tortured dust band, edged by hot young stars, is a clear indication of recent upheaval. An active supermassive black hole in the core provides the power for its activity.
