Description

The delicate form of this spiral galaxy belies its substantial size. At 200,000 light years across, this galaxy is about twice the diameter of our Milky Way. The huge spiral hosts a super-massive black hole of about two million solar masses at its core. In 2012 a supernova was observed in this remote world.

NGC 1365 lies 60 million light years distant in the direction of the constellation of Fornax (the "furnace") .

This image was captured with a 20" f/4.5 remotely controlled telescope at Siding Spring, Australia.
