      Description

NGC 4449 is a irregular dwarf galaxy only about 12 Mly away. It is considered a star burst galaxy because of the high number of star formation regions. Look carefully and you can see dark nebula and a lot of Ha regions. This is a cropped image from the full 0.5 x 0.5 degree field that I get with the 16803 sensor.

This image is the first taken with my functioning fully automated C14 Edge system. I still have to roll it out and do a polar alignment, but once I have the guide star acquired, it can run unattended all night. I just have to make sure to keep it far enough off the edge of the taxiway so that a late night passing airplane can't hit it...and I can go to sleep. Hallelujah! Focusing was done automatically between exposures with the IFI/Optec FocusLock system, which has worked flawlessly. It looks like I still have some filter offsets to work out but it's pretty close to being fully functional. This data was taken over a two night period. The first night I wasted a lot of the clear sky time getting things set up and running. The second night, I just got it going and went to sleep. Unfortunately the wind started out at around 8 kts (way too much!) and only gradually decreased to around 4 kts through the second night. That meant that I had to toss out a lot of data due to the gusty conditions. (It was cold enough that I had to use a dew-shield, which make matters even worse.) Most of this data was between 1.8 and 2.5 arc-sec FWHM.

I've uploaded a couple of cropped views. Without spiral arms this galaxy is not super spectacular so it's best to zoom in a bit to appreciate all of the features. I made the final view a pretty tight crop to present it a bit better. As always, C&C is more than welcome...
