Description

I don't know why, but the first time I saw this little cluster in the telescope eyepiece, just south of Gamma Cyg, it just grabbed me forever after. A little "H" in the sky. So tonight I grabbed a copy with my C8 HyperStar camera.

Revision improves color content and more gracefully mitigates field stars without eroding the central character of this image.

---------

Revise with improved field star mitigation.

---------

Whole new approach, using super-pixel deBayering, drizzled integration, synthetic luminance, linear space field star erosion, and then stretching to nonlinear space.

---------

Rev G: Improved field star reduction. The goal is not so much as to remove field stars, as to make them less obtrusive. A variation on my original technique now applies a star mask in the linear image, erodes a 5x5 morphological kernel, then remove mask and apply mild sharpening with LMRT, enhancing layer with scale length 2 by a modest amount (e.g. 0.5). Then the image is stretched (dynamic range compressed) with MS to visible range.

The mild sharpening applied after morphological erosion brings back the faint field stars a bit, with considerably less prevalence in the image, but makes for a more honest and pleasing image.

To avoid undue noise amplification during the sharpening, TGV denoising is applied prior to erosion and sharpening, in the linear image.

All processing takes place on a drizzle integrated image, then downsampled by 2x for final presentation. The image was super-pixel deBayered. This is in keeping with the actual spatial resolution of the CFA camera.

Can you spot the planetary nebula at the East side?
