Description

This is not just a tree...

Deadvlei is set amidst the oldest desert on earth. Surrounded by the highest dunes, this now desolate clay pan immortalises dozens of ancient dried-up camel trees. It’s magnificent. It’s Africa…

Located near the famous Sossusvlei in Namibia, Deadvlei (dead marsh) is a dried up white clay pan. It’s estimated that 600-700 years ago the climate changed and the drought hit, which lead to the camel trees dying. The remaining ’skeletons’ are black due to the sun scorching them. They cannot decompose as the climate is too dry.

Deadvlei is surrounded by the highest sand dunes in the world, some reaching up 300-400 meters tall.
