Description

The Large Size Telescope Prototype (LST-1) is the first of the ~23m aperture Cherenkov radiation telescopes installed in La Palma as part of the Cherenkov Telescope Array. This 4 second exposure is pulled from a timelapse of LST-1 as it observed near zenith. When these point towards you they show a beautiful reflection of the night sky in their primary mirror, but I wasn't lucky enough to get that shot this time around.

Unlike a typical optical telescope, these are designed to indirectly detect gamma ray signals by measuring the radiation produced by fast moving particles generated when gamma rays strike the upper atmosphere. They use photomultiplying detectors and are capable of detecting single photon events, sampling billions of times a second.
