Description

M45 Pleiades Open Cluster and Nebula

Located 450 light-years from Earth, the Pleiades is one of the nearest star clusters to Earth and is the most easily seen by the naked eye. Stretching 44 light-years across, it is also called The Seven Sisters due to its seven bright stars, although over 1000 members have been identified. The bright young stars illuminate interstellar dust forming the blue reflection nebula Maia and Merope. North is at the top.

The streak near the left side just above center is caused by Asteroid 769 Tatjana.
