Rev C - I found that by softening the nebular features in my extracted luminosity image, just ahead of star mask creation, allows for much cleaner star mask creation. I do that with HDRMT on the grayscale image after histogram stretching, using a scale length of 3. Thereafter I use the usual MLT transforms to extract the star mask.

I use that star mask back on the grayscale linear luminosity image, then use iterated morphological selection to diminish field stars. Then that diminished luminosity image is re-stretched to nonlinear to become the luminosity channel of the stretched color image.

That accomplishes two things: (A) by eroding stars in the linear domain, the steep wings of the star profiles do a much better job of diminishing field stars, and (B) by eroding only the luminosity channel I leave the colors of the original stars intact in the stretched color image.

I find that the slight improvement made during star mask creation, dramatically reduces the residual fogging that accompanies field star reduction. Much of the cloudy mottling in the background of prior images is directly attributable to that residual fogging, caused largely by the median mixing of close star pairs.
