Description

The Horse head Nebula (Barnard 33) is a dark nebula in the Orion Molecular Cloud complex, approximately 1500 light-years from Earth. The redish glow behind the nebula originates from hydrogen gas ionized by the nearby star Sigma Orionis, and is known as IC434. The bright nebula in the lower left is NGC 2023, an emission/reflection nebula that at 4 light years in diameter, is one of the largest reflection nebulae known.

The dark Horse head nebula is an active star forming region.
