Description

This image shows full sunlight on the bottom, complete darkness at the top, and the most interesting sunset transition section in the middle. Note how the lengthening shadows give a great perspective of mountains and smooth areas. The pair of craters in the center are Atlas and Hercules. Hercules is the crater with the smaller crater inside. For scale, the large crater at the upper left, Posidonius, is about 60 miles in diameter. Also, note the particularly long shadows emanating from the Burg crater rim at the top center of the image. Like all moon images taken from Earth, including from the Hubble, the details of the Apollo lunar missions are too small to be visible.
