Description

The farthest planet from the Sun that can be observed with the naked eye, Saturn is shown here with its four largest, although faint, moons - Titan, Rhea, Dione and Tethys. The second largest planet in our solar system to Jupiter, Saturn is not the only planet to have rings -- made of chunks of ice and rock -- but none are as visible to us as Saturn's. Visible here are the 4 main ring systems of Saturn - the outer Ring A, the large gap of the Cassini division, the bright Ring B, and the adjacent inner grayish Ring C. The shadow caused by the sun of the planet on its ring is seen at the top, while the shadow of the ring on the planet is seen towards the bottom. The upper shadow looks distorted to me but I haven't been able to find a scientific explanation for it. The bands seen in the gases of its upper atmosphere are the result of fast winds which can reach over 1,000 mph.
