Today we bring you the Rosette Nebula! This is a picture we captured in March 2017 and didn't have time to process until now.

The Rosette Nebula is dense with hydrogen, hence the redness to most of the photo. All of that hydrogen is pretty active, stirring up and creating lots of new stars (about 2500) in this region. Those bright ones in the middle, they are large O-type stars that are much larger than our own Sun, and their radiation is exciting all the atoms there and making that hydrogen glow.

We love all the details here in this nebula, especially those little tendrils coming out from the middle of the donut, and the wispy waves of nebulosity at the top. We're also particularly happy with all those great star colors you see outside the nebula as well. It's proving our move into CCD astrophotography has helped to produce much higher quality photos than we've ever done before, even with such a short exposure time.
