Description

My first attempt at Ha solar imaging. Still a lot to learn, but I'm pretty happy with this first result. My wife, dog, and I drove 5 hours out to northern Nevada to hopefully catch the ring of fire. While it was cloudy during the annular itself, it cleared up toward the tail end of the eclipse and I was able to capture a few video clips. I then stacked these in AutoStakkert and processed & colorized the final image in Photoshop.

The Ha solar processing workflow takes many artistic liberties, like inverting the image to increase contrast and then manually adding false color to the monochrome image. I decided to take my own artistic liberty too. Though the silhouette of the Moon on the Sun's surface is natural and in my data, the part of the Moon visible outside the Sun is not. I've seen a bunch of similar images and they all just fade to black in this area. I wanted something a bit more realistic looking, so I added a black circle in Photoshop over the glow of the sky background. I'm happy with how it turned out, but if I could do it again, I would take a real silhouette of the Moon (with rough edges and all) and use that instead.

Hoping to practice even more Ha solar imaging before April's total solar eclipse. Clear skies!
