Description

5.5h  HA , 6.5h SII and  6.5h O3  images taken using a mono camera and made starless using starnet were combined into a narrowband SHO image of IC805 at F 4.5, f = 900 mm.   The starless NB image was built using StarExterminator  PI pixmath and HA was used as luminance.  RGB stars from a 1.3h OSC camera image taken through a UHC filter were then added to the NB image using the PIxmath.  Capture was with Sharpcap and preprocessing plus processing  (background removal, noise reduction, photometric colour calibration and curves) was carried out using PixInsight.

The Heart Nebula spans an area of sky almost 2 degrees across and much more extensive than the image shown here.  The core which is shown is also known as the Running dog nebula, IC 1805.  The heart nebula  is an HII emission nebula with many darker dust lanes, is 7500 ly distant and is located in the Perseus Arm of the Galaxy in the constellation Cassiopeia.

The " running dog" brightest part of the heart nebula (a knot at its western edge) is  energised and ionized by a small group of stars near the nebula's center. This open star cluster of stars, known as Collinder 26 or Melotte 15, contains some bright stars nearly 50 times the mass of the Sun, and many more dim stars.  OIII emissions -  mainly seen as bluish light near the hot star cluster and SII  (mainly visible near the ionisation edge nebula periphery) are also present  as well as the dominant HII emission (as depicted in the SHO image original).
