Description

This galaxy (also nicknamed "The whale" because of its shape) is the principal member of the Canes Venatici II cloud of galaxies, an association of galaxies whose membership also includes the spectacular NGC4656. It is located 28 mly. away and has a diameter of 127000 ly. This is a very bright, large spiral galaxy viewed almost edge-on. It shows a complex structure of dust lanes with several knotty star forming regions.
