Description

NGC 2264 contains the Cone Nebula at the bottom and the Christmas Tree Cluster in the middle of this pic. The cone's shape comes from a dark absorption nebula consisting of cold molecular hydrogen and dust in front of a faint emission nebula containing hydrogen ionized by S Monocerotis, the brightest star of NGC 2264. The faint nebula is approximately seven light-years long and is 2,700 light-years away from Earth. Just above the blue reflection nebula in the center is the Fox Fur nebula, looking particularly foxy in this pic. The dark nebula B39 is in the upper right corner looking a bit like a jackal. And in the upper left corner there is an unnamed structure that looks remarkably like Shrek, if not the Skipper from Gilligan's island (if you squint just a little bit).
