Description

In September I captured two different images of the Veil Nebula. One of the Eastern, and one of the Western. Yesterday I noticed that parts of the complex were in both pictures. So, I wondered if they could be merged in Lightroom, which is common for arch-style Milky Way photos. Much to my surprise, it worked! But, I did notice that the differences in processing between the two images were apparent. So, I merged the unprocessed stacked image and reprocessed the whole thing. That worked out much better since all of the colors were balanced. However, due to the way lightroom did the pano and my crop, the whole thing isn't visible.

The images were from two different nights, the Western was on September 2nd, Eastern was on September 10th. All acquisition settings and number of frames were the same.

Processing Details:

Both stacked in Deep Sky Stacker

Merged stacked images in Lightroom to make a panorama of them both.

Processed in Pixinsight:

Split channels using ChannelExtraction
LinearFit to balance to red (lowest signal channel)
ChannelCombination
BackgroundNeutralization
MultiscaleLinearTransform
HistogramTransformation (manually lowered the stretch a little to keep the sky more gray)
Made a star mask
Deconvolution using star mask
MorphologicalTransformation using star mask
curves transformation on RGB/K, S, H, and C channels

Photoshop:
Boosted saturation to bring out colors
Cropped to 5x7
Spot healing brush on a couple of really small artifacts made by Lightroom during the pano merge.
