Description

This object is a molecular cloud located 1400 light years away in the constellation of Andromeda at a declination of +49 degrees. The cloud, known both as LBN 534 and GAL 110-13, stretches for 1.5 degrees across the image.

The bright blue stars just lower right of center are believed to be responsible for illuminating this molecular cloud. The leftmost star of this grouping is responsible for illuminating the blue reflection nebula known as vdB 158. This nebula is the brightest of many small reflection nebulae seen in this image.

One of my favorite parts of this image is the faint small dark oval spot in the cloud just above vdB 158. I also find it interesting that the area immediately around the bright cloud is darker than any of the other background in this region.  I checked and I think this is a real effect and not a processing artifact.

A small bluish star-like planetary nebula (PK 110-12-1) is seen in the mouseover towards the bottom of the image.
