Description

M29 is an open cluster located 5200 light years away in the constellation of Cygnus at a declination of 38 degrees.  It is a magnitude 6.6 cluster which spans 13 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 20 light years.

This cluster is too faint to be spotted by the naked eye, but can be seen in binoculars. The cluster is relatively small, about a quarter of the size of the full moon. Although only slightly seen in the background of the image, there is a tremendous amount of Milky Way dust obscuring the cluster. Without this dust, the stars in this cluster would appear about 1,000 times brighter to us. There are about 50 stars in this cluster. Note that the hottest stars have a purplish hue in the image, compared to their companions which are slightly cooler and bluish.
