Description

I did not intend to image this object. I wanted to image M24 a Star Cloud in Sagittarius.

However because of light pollution I could not find it with my 72mm scope. Normally I can just

barely see this star cloud using averted vision. Usually I use NGC 6603 an open cluster located

within this star cloud to verify that I'm where I need to be. However I could not find this open

cluster last night. From what I've read M24 is a detached portion of the Milky Way and not

really an open cluster. I've often wondered how Messier spotted this detached portion of the

Milky Way using equipment available to him in 1764 when I have trouble seeing this in all of

my scopes using modern eyepieces. It seems more likely to me that he saw the open cluster

NGC 6603. Anyway since the sky was still clear and I didn't want to waste it I quickly decided to

image M101 because I've not imaged it with my AT72ED. About half way through my imaging

the sky started getting hazy and less transparent and this affected the detail visible in my

light frames. I chose to continue imaging and I processed my image using all of the light

frames even though half of them were degraded by the hazy sky. With all of that said this is

my first image of M101 using my Astro-Tech AT72ED Refractor. Please enjoy.
