Description

My first attempt at Markarian's Chain was with a focal reducer/field flattener that I could never get tuned properly. So when I got back in the game with a repaired objective (? broken oil seal? pinched optics due to cell contraction in extreme cold? both? --no explanation, just "fixed it") I thought this would make a good test target project, both as a 2 panel mosaic and to see what a different flattener might do. I haven't rigorously tuned this one either, but it definitely helps in the corners. The plan is a more "scientific" approach to adjusting backfocus--saving it for moonlit nights, assuming we get clear skies.

This is one panel of 69 frames and one of 57, each 3 minutes in Bortle 6-7 skies, over three nights--I have a limited imaging window at this target's location. I used MosaicbyCoordinates and PhotometricMosaic basically at defaults. I did have to adjust the join position to avoid artefacts right in the Eyes. Aside from the obvious flaws in my acquisition and processing in general, I can't say I see anything horrid attributable to the the mosaic process per se. If anyone does, please let me know! If you do look closely (and ignore the problems!) you can see the jet in M87--amazing! Without trying exposures that might optimize its visibility. If you have suggestions for this, let me know!

I am pretty happy with this, but then I just saw a 3 hour RASA 8 shot with a 2600--impressive field of view and detail! I won't be running out to get one, though--I think this stands up pretty well, given the differences in sky conditions and overall rig configuration and OSC vs mono (for the image I was seeing).
