Description

This image of the Veil Nebula was taken using an O3 narrow band filter and presented as an inverted image to better show the low level, filamentary detail. Taken on a night of above average seeing and transparency, the structure in the nebula is surprisingly detailed.

Prior to the advent of digital imaging in the early '70's, all astrophotography was performed using glass plates coated with a variety of photographic emulsions provided by Kodak. Once developed, these "negatives" were usually used "as is" -- black images and stars on a white background. Several studies showed that the human eye does a better job of seeing fine detail when that detail is presented as black detail on a white background.
