Description

Tonight there was a bright 3/4 Moon almost directly overhead washing out the sky. When I went

outside I wasn't sure what I was going to image. I had a couple of Nebulae in mind that I've

not imaged so I searched for these objects. I spent nearly two hours moving my scope and

taking test images but I could never get either nebula in an image. As bright as the Moon was

the object could have been in an image but because of the light I could not see it. I finally

decided on IC1396 Herschel's Garnet Star. I've never viewed this object or imaged this object.

In my eyepiece this star was one of the prettiest I've ever seen. The color was amazing and not

like any other star that I can remember. Of course the star was not really my target. I was

interested in the nebulosity and dense star field that surrounds the star. However I did not

capture as much nebulosity as I had hoped to capture I assume because of the Moon. I need

to try this object again when there is no Moon. Even though I didn't capture as much nebulosity as I wanted I am pleased with the image. I still think the image is interesting

because of Herschel's Garnet Star and I get a sense of the star being imbedded in this

rich star field and nebulosity. Please enjoy my first image of IC1396.
