Description

Not every deep sky object can be overwhelming and awe-inspiring. I think this object has a quiet beauty in its simple layout and elegant lack of symmetry.

This humble open cluster of 25 stars is located 1600 light years away in the southern constellation of Vela. It's diameter only spans 2 light years. Discovered in 1755 by Abbe Nicolas Louis de Lacaille viewing from southern Africa, it is one of the earliest southern deep sky objects, predating the Messier list. From my viewing location, this object only rises 7 degrees above the southern horizon.

Note the interesting trio of blue double stars, towards the lower left, upper left, and upper right corners, that look very similar in color and orientation.
