Description

Thor's Helmet is an emission nebula located around 12,000 light years away in the constellation of Canis Major. The gases are being ejected by a 'Wolf-Rayet' star (WR7). These are hot, giant stars at the end of their stellar evolution - in a a 'pre-supernova' phase. The nebula is estimated to be around 30 light years in diameter.

This is a bicolour image from the Deep Sky West remote imaging facility in New Mexico. Data collection took place over several nights between 27 December 2017 and 5 February 2018.

Description: I recently had some interesting PMs with mikefulb and this led me to rethink my NGC 2359 somewhat. This is less 'aggressive', and that has allowed the Ha to the right of the object to be more visible. I also rotated the image to the more usual presentation.
