Description

I decided to try my hand at processing some data from the Hubble Legacy Archive.

This is known as the Cosmic Horseshoe, a pair of gravitationally lensing galaxies. The foreground galaxy, LRG 3-757, is a luminous red galaxy with a mass 100 times higher than that of the Milky Way. The background galaxy is 10.3 billion light-years away and is smeared into the shape of a horseshoe by the gravity of the foreground galaxy. The image uses 475-nm (blue), 606-nm (green), and 814-nm (red) filters.
