Description

This object is a dwarf barred irregular galaxy located only 10 million light-years away in the constellation of Canes Venatici. Galaxies are like people - some are highly structured and well organized, while others are a bit messy and chaotic. This galaxy definitely falls into the latter category.

NGC 4214 is about the same size and structure as the Large Magellanic Cloud, but is 100 times further away from us. It is 37 degrees from face-on and is also known as NGC 4228.

Bright blue star clusters and pink star formation regions are spread throughout the galaxy. This is still an active star producing galaxy. By comparing this image to a Hubble image, it appears that some of the bright blue dots in this image are individual stars, not clusters. This is one of the few times that I have been able to image individual stars in another galaxy.

The surrounding star field provides a colorful structured framing to this wonderfully unstructured galaxy.
