Description

First attempt at M27 from my backyard. The moon was almost full, but the transparency and seeing were good, so I stuck a ES UHC filter on my camera and went for it. This is a stack of two images, one with 600x1 sec live-stacked exposures and the other taken immediately after the first with 300x2 sec live-stacked exposures. Both images ended up with nearly identical sharpness, as I didn't have to change the FWHM filter at all when switched from 1 to 2 second exposures. I stacked these two images saved from SharpCap using Deep Sky Stacker to produce a the final stack, did a little more color adjustment to bring the hints of polar nebulosity into view and a little additional color balancing. I did not apply any sharpening.

I took an image of M27 at a dark sky site a couple weeks back, but the seeing was terrible and I only had time for a 5 minute exposure, so I never posted it. This image is far superior, despite the near full moon in the west. The center looks a little washed out to me, so I think I may attack the image again with curves to improve contrast in that region.

Description: Restacked the raw images and expanded contrast and tuned color balance to remove red cast in stars and preserve subtle blue-green polar halos.

Description: OK. I got aggressive and knocked out that green cast. It makes the actual green halo more noisy, but the image is better. More data stacked onto this image in the future will help.
