Description

The images for this animation of the transit of Io, its shadow, and the great red spot on the meridian were taken on the last night of the Nightfall Star Party in Borrego Springs, CA.  Unfortunately the seeing was pretty bad that night, which is not uncommon in the desert.  This animation covers a time interval of 1 hour and 36 minutes, starting at 5:35 UT on November 12th (9:35 PM PST on November 11th).  I had to stop the sequence when the camera/scope was about to hit the mount tripod after crossing the meridian, and the seeing was getting even worse, so there was no point in doing the flip and continuing the imaging.

Each image in this animation was processed the same way, the variations are entirely due to the variable and poor seeing conditions.
