Description

At the link provided above, NASA makes available FITS images for CAS A that were generated by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory telescope, which was launched into space on July 23,1999. Colors were assigned to the three raw FITS images which represented CAS A in soft (Red), medium (Green) and hard (Blue) X-Ray bands.

On the Chandra website there is considerable material on CAS A for the adventuresome to pursue. It is thought that the supernova event itself was observed in the 1600s. If those observations are valid, the actual event took place about 11,000 years ago. This image gives some idea of the damage that was done.

Raw Fits Images were provided by NASA/CXC/SAO and they were processed into a final image by Jim Matzger.
