Description

This is a target that doesn't need much introduction. In fact, it is likely one of the most commonly imaged areas of the summer sky. I've actually never given it a look so I spent a bit of time over the last couple months collecting data.

This is the core of the larger pelican nebula structure. In this close-up view it is easy to pick out the turbulent nebulosity caused by newly formed stars. The most famous of these is Herbig-Haro 555 which sits at the tip of the long tendril in the center of the image. The curved jets give the appearance of a hammerhead shark viewed from the top. These are actually outflow jets emitted by a new star and those jets are actually being curved by stellar wind in the area. This same wind helped to carve out this interesting and evolving formation of nebulosity. There are several more of these objects in the field. Though they are less conspicuous, a curious eye can pick them out.

This image turned into a conglomeration of a couple data sets. I used my normal narrowband setup (EdgeHD 8") for Ha and OIII data for the main image. I used RGB star colors from a different setup entirely (6" f/4 Newt with an ASI183MM Pro). So this combination could be loosely written as HaOIIIRGB where Ha is the main luminance component. I took some creative liberty in the process by creating a typical Hubble Palette tricolor look from bicolor data. I hope it comes across reasonably well.

Thanks for looking and enjoy!
