Description

Imaged Mars on September 5, 2018 using the Celestron Mars Filter. I picked this filter up to have another option for the big Mars opposition this summer, but never got around to trying it out until now. I was pleasantly surprised at the performance of the filter. In live view the image was very similar to what I see with my Baader IR 685 pass filter. The color balance is wacky, but the contrast is much improved over my images taken with a UV-IR cut filter. The gain and exposure required to get my usual ~60% histogram were about the same as with a UV-IR cut filter.

Filter description from the Celestron website: "Celestron’s Mars filter combines the advantages of red and blue filters in a single filter to bring out a wealth of detail while allowing maximum light transmission for brighter views. This high quality glass filter contains multiple coatings to maximize light transmission in specific wavelengths, bringing out incredible detail of the Martian surface."

The left hand image was stacked and wavelet sharpened, but no color adjustments were made. The central image is a black&white version of the left hand image (how I have been processing my IR pass filter images). The right hand image has been color balanced. I've used the black & white version to add detail to images made with the usual UV-IR cut filter by combining in WINjupos.
