in the outskirts of the great Taurus molecular cloud, the California nebula is still surrounded by lots of dust. Actually it is one of the nearest HII regions, about 100 ly away and double the distance to the Taurus complex. This is a pure DSLR color image, no extra H-Alpha added. How bright it stands out!
