This image shows numerous reflection and dark nebulae located in the constellation of Monoceros. This area of the sky is close to the more famous Cone Nebula, Christmas Tree cluster and the Fox Fur Nebula, and may be part of the same cloud complex.

I don't know of another small section of the sky which contains so many distinct reflection objects (7), all labeled in the attached annotated image. This field of view also contains a star cluster, several dark nebula, and at least one Herbig-Haro object. The nebulae vary in distance between 500 and 3000 light years away.

In the lower left, MWC 147 (a Herbig-Haro object) is a large star in a surrounding dust cloud. It looks to me like there is another tiny Herbig-Haro object on the left side of the image, which I labeled in the annotated version, but I could not find any confirmation of this in the literature.

Since I love reflection and dark nebulae, I really enjoy many of the different objects in this field of view. I like how the color of IC 447 transitions from blue at the bottom to purple at the top, as well as the many curving dark nebulae which provide a beautiful contrast to the colors of the reflection nebulae. For the 3 bright objects on the left side of the image, I like the wispy patterns of dark and light and I imagine that the exact details of these objects will change over the years as the dust clouds move about. I am excited to take another image of this area in the future to see if I can identify any subtle changes in the structure of these objects.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
