Arp 316 - Hickson 44 (2018)

This image captures a galaxy filled panorama located about 70 million light years away in the constellation of Leo. I have added an annotated image to help understand the description below. This group galaxy object is the 44th entry in the Hickson Galaxy Group catalog and is also designated Arp 316. The image is an interesting study in various galaxy types, including spiral, elliptical, barred, irregular, and distorted.

Just above center is the largest galaxy in this image, NGC 3190, a striking spiral that we see nearly edge on. Note the thick tilted main dust lane and the smaller intersecting dust lane, reflecting tidal interactions with nearby galaxies. The distortion is so severe that this galaxy has two designations - NGC 3189 and NGC 3190 - because it was thought to be 2 objects long ago. The faint star streams at each end of this galaxy also indicate some tidal distortion.

Continuing the distortion theme, to the upper right is NGC 3187, an S-shaped spiral. The interactions with nearby galaxies has not only severely distorted the arms, but it also looks like this interaction has initiated the formation of numerous bright blue star clusters throughout the galaxy.

Above and to the left is NGC 3193, a large fuzzy elliptical galaxy. To the lower right is NGC 3185, a beautiful barred galaxy. Many more faint galaxies are seen throughout the image. I have attached a negative image on which these many faint galaxies can be more clearly seen.
