Description

100 million years ago this area of the sky was black. It was little more than a diffuse region of hydrogen gas; however, after a series of gravitational interactions, that darkness was replaced with the cluster now known as the Pleiades. Characterized by their brilliant blue glow, the brightest stars in this image are hundreds of times more luminous than our Sun. Their intense radiation illuminates the cloud of interstellar material through which they are passing.
