Description

Merope, a blue-white, sub-giant star, is a member of the Pleiades open star cluster in the constellation of Taurus. It is approximately 380 light years away.

Merope is surrounded by the Merope Nebula (NGC 1435), a diffuse faint reflection nebula which is about the size of the full moon. The blue colour of the nebula is attributed to fine carbon dust.

Close to Merope (0.06 light years) is IC 349 - a nebula discovered by Edward Emerson Barnard in 1890. This is just discernible in this image between 9 & 10 o’clock immediately adjacent to Merope.

Merope was imaged between 6 and 27 January 2019 from a remote imaging rig in Spain owned and operated by Barry Wilson and Steve Milne.
