The Lion Nebula (Sh2-132). This was a tough one! I sank two swampy Northern Virginia nights into the Lion Nebula and gathered about 12 hours of dual-narrowband data with the Optolong L-eNhance filter. The whole target was dim, but especially the Oiii regions in the "hind legs." I struggled mightily to stretch this Oiii channel in AstroPixelProcessor and PixInsight, but it was hard to amplify the signal without also amplifying the noise, so it remains somewhat weak.

This project could easily benefit from another 10 hours--can't they all!--but neither the weather nor my schedule is likely to accommodate that need anytime soon. The final image is a combination of the narrowband (HOO) nebula with broadband stars. (I settled for just 15 minutes of BB stars because I captured them for several projects in one short night, but I think they look fine nonetheless.)

This is definitely one of those projects that grew on me as I continued to process it. I was disappointed in the stack that emerged from AstroPixel Processor, and I wasn't sure it could be salvaged. But some persistence in PixInsight led me to a string of incremental improvements and eventually an image I'm quite pleased with.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
