Description

On a recent vacation in Florida, I had the opportunity to photograph the January lunar eclipse in it's entirety. I assembled the attached composite of 13 exposures from the nearly 400 images I took that night. They represent the key stages of the total lunar eclipse, including the penumbral and umbral phases. The images were taken in Ft. Pierce FLA, on the grounds of the FP State University and Hallstrom Planetarium where I was a guest of the Treasure Coast Astronomical Society. I thank David Brown and the TCAS members for their hospitality. The equipment that I used to capture these images included an Olympus OM-D E-M5 MKII, an M. Zuiko 75-300mm f4.8-6.7 lens, supported on a Star Adventurer tracking unit, mounted on a tripod. The camera settings for the various exposures included:

- lit moon surface (pre-eclipse or early penumbra): f6.7, shutter 1/750 - 1/250 sec, ISO 100, 200

- various eclipse stages ( penumbra and umbra): f6.7 - 11, shutter 1/6 - 3 sec, ISO 1600, 3200

- dark & light phase, exiting eclipse ( penumbra): f6.7, shutter 1/6 sec, ISO 800

The images had modest processing done in Adobe Lightroom and I created a custom image template, also using Lightroom.
