Description

This is SH2-313 or Abell 35 in Ha/Oiii with EdgeHD11 and ASI1600 at 0.4" per pixel downsized to 0.8" after applying levels in Photoshop. No sharpening or smoothing applied. Direct combination of Ha channel and faux HB channel with 0.5x Oiii channel mapped to Oiii color after applying levels.

This was originally thought to be a planetary nebula but is now viewed as a binary star with a hot white dwarf (not resolved here) passing through an unrelated Hii region at supersonic speed to create a bow shock front.

There are several amateur and professional images of this nebula to show it in deep colors, but my main goal here was to resolve the shape and details of the bow shock. To me it is surprising that it is so circular and appears to wrap around on the left side - as opposed to being more parabolic.

One other tidbit about this is that it's the last entry in the Sharpless 2 catalog.

The nebula is extremely faint and barely shows in 5m exposures at f/7. This is a stack of 38 5m exposures in Ha and 36 in Oiii for a total exposure time of 6 hours.
