M96 (ou NGC 3368) est une galaxie spirale située dans la constellation du Lion. Elle a été découverte par Pierre Méchain le 20 mars 1781, la même nuit que M95, et Charles Messier l'inclut dans son catalogue le 24 mars de la même année.
Selon les sources, cette galaxie est située à une distance de environ 11 Mpc (∼35,9 millions d'a.l.) du Système solaire. Compte tenu de son diamètre apparent de 6 minutes d'arc, et en prenant une valeur médiane pour la distance, la partie la plus brillante de la galaxie possède un diamètre réel de 66 000 années-lumière environ.
M96 est le membre le plus brillant d'un groupe de galaxies appelé groupe de M96 ou groupe du Lion I, qui comprend entre autres M95 et M105.
